>> the worst is past. almost all of the state has converted over to rain but as you take a look to the north and west, you can see see some wintry weather around northern car roll county, freeland area. check this out. thunder and lightning strikes on the eastern shore showing you the power. winter weather advisory continue. high wind advisory until tomorrow. wet windy conditions and you see the temperature differential. 40s on the shore. 30 in baltimore. those are the areas we have the highest concern forks icy spots. mostly rain the rest of the night except well north and west of the city. we'll talk about thisproaching . when the roads are covered

with the wintry mix like this, that's when the state highway crews hit the highway. they have been watching the storm, treating the roads with salt. they have to move to other chemicals to get results. . >> the forecast will go down to 34, which is above freezing but it's close to the freezing mark. we purge people to be careful. >> state highway officials also stress that drivers should be prepared with essentials. never head out in bad weather without a flashlight and the good news is temperatures are not expected to drop low enough to cause major problems. the bad news it's rainy windy mess. joce sterman has more. >> reporter: that white christmas looks so beautiful.

this, not so much. this is really ugly. as you're heading out to go back home, it will make for some messy travel. we were out on the roads earlier, and things were clear on the back roads. now with the rain all of that is rain -- is adding up to rain. carroll county in westminster, they got the biggest hit as a result of this storm. meteorologist mike masco said at 8:00 they got a burst of snow. they got are couple inches on the ground and it turned to sleet. we're seeing this messy wet rain that's getting rid of the beautiful snow. so all of this creating a mess on the roadways. we have not heard of major accidents in the baltimore area, just a lot have people trying to take this slow, be cautious no major wrecks, but you want to be

ground in indianapolis for a blizzard that is expected took the worst to hit there in four years. whiteout conditions here have travelers sleeping at the airport while snow piles up on the runway. dallas more than 1,000 tried to switch flights to no avail. american airlines canceled hundreds of flights. much of the south is still reeling today after more than 33 tornadoes ripped through states ranging from texas to mississippi. in mobile, alabama, a twister left things scattered. mobile's murphy high school took a toll. >> to see all this, it's depressing. >> reporter: in oklahoma city five people decide in a house -- died in a house fire just trying to stay warm using space heaters. >> there was nothing that

anybody could have done. >> reporter: now as the storm moves east, parts of ohio and new york could get hammered by over a foot of snow. our very active weather pattern will continue not only with the current storm system but there's the potential for another storm system to take a similar path. blizzard warnings stretch for 732 continuous miles. reporting for abc news, new york. updating you on breaking news we first brought you last night at 11. a carney town man is dead after police shot him. we have more. >> reporter: while maryland state police are handling the investigation it was an officer who shot and killed becker on

christmas night as he was threatening police with a hammer. police were called to this home on commerce in taneytown. edward becker, pictured here from a previous arrest was break out windows of a pickup truck. his parents called 911 but never could have guessed what would happen next. >> three officers respond, approached the subject, shouting commands advising him to put the weapon down. >> reporter: becker didn't listen, not only continuing to wave the weapon but apreparing taneytown officer. once about to swing, the officer shot becker, who would later die in an area hospital. we spoke with his family and friends off camera. while they didn't want to do an interview, they said becker had a problem with alcohol. state police confirmed during the 911 call the 26-year-old's

parents did tell the operator he was drinking and out of control. now the officer who shot becker is on routine administrative leave while they conduct their investigation. they said becker's parents are being cooperative. now that christmas is over, we are days away from this looming fiscal cliff which would raise taxes on all americans and immediate cuts. some agencies are phages furloughs -- facing furloughs. president obama and congressional leaders are cutting their vacation short to be back in washington but it's not clear whether a last-minute deal can be reached. >> i don't want to go over the cliff. >> middle class people will have their taxes go up an average of $2,000 a career and we should start making meaningful reform on the debt.

>> there's talk about a smaller deal by harry reid that would prevent tax increases on those earning less than $250,000. starbucks has come up with a democratic way for people to send a message to washington. the coffee giant is asking the stores to write the words come together on all drinks served tomorrow and friday. well, they invested in a finance company owned by a now infamous baltimore insurance pitch man. now that hal katz business has gone belly up, they're out of luck. investigators continue digging into the story we first brought you in october. some lost college funds, life savings after funding one of katz' companies. >> it's not just a miss proargs

now that we've seen snow, people are pulling out shovels and in some cases snowblowers. they can be dangerous if you're

not careful. doctors say every year they still see hundreds of people coming in with snowblower injuries. >> a lot of people don't reach all the way in. they reach partway and remove that clog of snow. that allows the other snow to get toffsed out. people come in with mangled fingers, but they haven't cut their gloves. >> experts say the safest thing to do is to use a stick or end of a mop or broom to clear it out. another thing people face is dry skin. things you can do to prevent it. >> reporter: winter can be a tough season, especially when it comes to your skin. combine the cold temperatures outside with the warm temperatures inside and the skin can crack. >> we lose nutrients.

we lose moisture. there are essential oils built into our skin. a lot of those things are difficult it replenish during the winter. >> reporter: fun treated dry skin can lead to dermatitis which causes swelling and infection. avoid lotions with alcohol or perfumes. >> avoid the long hot showers. make sure after the shower or bath use a good moisturer. >> reporter: while patches of dry skin can occur anywhere it's common on the lower legs, abdomen. check and keep them moist. if they become seriously inflammed, it's best to see your doctor. interesting radar pattern.

we have clearing up into baltimore. some nasty rain coming down, cold rain with a few flakes. cecil county through the eastern shore and a winter band. let's show you that. you can see the wrap around band. the center of the storm, that low pressure area, sort of a miniature version of that hurricane look right here south of baltimore but there's cold air wrapping on the back side. the winter weather will kick back up across frederick county and some will come back up through the carroll county area. it's going to be a short burst and behind that will be drying conditions but it is interesting to see that one last sort of wintry band on the back edge. winter weather advisories continue across through carroll. it is expired for the city. this is through 7:00. we'll see if that gets extended.

also, high wind advisories are up. we'll take that window down and take a look at some of the cameras. that winter weather and then the snow kind of going away and the rain in towson. we'll take you to baltimore, robert w. towson, a snowy start. doing a number on it. there's slushy spots. thick in ellicott city. there's some snow on the grass. in bel air a little tough to see with that winter weather but the rain clears our camera lens. 37 at the airport. temperatures five degrees above freezing there. north and west is where we have temperatures close to freezing. winds picking up, steady from the northeast. they will be wrapping to the north and northwest overnight and gusting. we had gust of 41 in easton.

that brings down the wind chill factor. it's not fit for man or beast out there. right now temperatures at that freezing mark, york to fredericks, right into carroll county, so there's still slick road concerns, especially to the north and west of baltimore, south and east not so much. we see the setup, large system. here's the center coming into our state. we won't see some snowy wet showers but for the most part we expect this to be more of a wind and rain effect. but an ugly scenario, tomorrow with clearing, the winds will stay up, whipping around. you see the cold air to the north that the will funnel. temperatures will struggle to get out of the 30s tomorrow and struggling to get out of the 30s as we go into the day on friday. overnight lows will be frigid. a big storm on the map continuing to blow out to the

north and east and early tomorrow. as we look at the overall future trend, what we're looking at is the setup into the next two and a half to three days as we push toward the weekend. this storm developing over the gulf, looks to make a coastal run. that could be another wintry mix by saturday. that will take awhile to get here. so here's a look at that forecast for you, setting up down to 34, maybe a had little sun tomorrow. let's check out the outlook into the next seven days. it looks like conditions are going to be clearing, though windy tomorrow. temperatures really cold tomorrow night. after that a break on friday before we get that saturday storm system. this one could produce a couple inches of snow at least around the immediate baltimore area. it's not a major winter storm but perhaps with a little more

punch. this one tops christmas eve. >> and nothing tomorrow but it doesn't look like it will be fun to go out. >> just a windy cold day. >> shovels, sleds, they weren't on your wish list or this christmas but that's what people have been shopping for today. ace hardware saw a rush in the basic supplies today. >> plenty of ice melt, plenty of snow shovels. there's plenty available right now. >> you still have a few days before that next round of winter weather. you can bet sales at hardware areas will be strong for the rest of the week. we use social media to communicate and check the news. now it's being used to check on a puppy. plus, christmas is over. it's time to take down the tree.

a puppy stolen from the humane society in oregon is back home thanks to social media. saturday the family went to the shelter to adopt a upy. after finishing the paperwork, the puppy was gone. the oregon humane society put out a tip and it led them to another home where the dog was kept. try getting into this house, santa.

in southern california allison likes christmas so much and christmas trees that she has more than 100 of them inside the house. she started the tradition 13 years ago and she keeps going and going and they're all decorated, too. santa left something unexpected in these stockings. new borns are wrapped in christmas stockings. the hospital says it helps create a warm welcoming environment for the maternity ward over christmas. many people head back to the stores to return unwanted gifts and hit the post christmas sales but what kind of deals can you expect. we'll compare them to black friday. we'll show you where you won't be able to return a gift even if you have the receipt. >> find out if a home automation system will work and if it's

welcome back. you're looking live in our county. 95 is one of the busiest roads, people traveling to and from holiday destinations. let's head over to the news storm center and check in with meteorologist wyatt everhart with a look at what to expect. >> i think you'll see more showers. we are getting a wintry mix. mostly rain along east of the chesapeake bay. as we take a closer look at the radar, overall, this is our one area of winter weather coming down. there could be hit and miss rain

nasty weather. the wind will be picking up in the next day or so. the rain has started to die down. early this morning it was a completely different scene. we're seeing that white christmas. this is video from this morning along westminster pike. they got a big burst of snow. it dumped a couple inches of snow on the ground. they got the sleet and the rain as well. as wyatt has been mentioning, we don't have much danger of refreezing, which is a good thing. we have no major ins accidents on the belt way, just a couple of disabled vehicles. you have to be careful with that holiday travel. of course, we'll be keeping an eye on the
